Contrast sensitivity vs. color blindness

Twenty tiles look identical. One is a fraction lighter. Some people find it in under half a second; others stare for ten. That gap has less to do with eyesight than most people assume.

Two different abilities

A color blindness test — the dotted plates you've seen at a clinic — asks whether you can tell which color something is. Spotting a nearly identical tile asks something else: whether you can detect a difference between two very similar stimuli. That's closer to contrast sensitivity, and the two abilities don't track each other. People with color vision deficiency often do fine on brightness-difference tasks, which is exactly why this game varies lightness rather than hue.

Difference is relative, not absolute

Weber's law, an old rule of thumb in sensory research, says the change you need in order to notice a difference scales with the size of the original stimulus. A small brightness step is obvious on a dark screen and invisible on a bright one.

Practically: turn brightness up, turn night mode off, and turn off auto-brightness. In the late levels the difference between tiles drops to roughly one or two percent, and at that point your display settings matter more than your eyes do.

Strong players don't search

Beginners scan tile by tile. On an 8×8 grid that's 64 sequential comparisons, and the time cost grows faster than the clock allows — which is why almost everyone hits a wall around level 20.

The better approach is to park your gaze near the center of the grid and soften your focus so the whole board registers as one image. Peripheral vision is poor at fine detail but perfectly good at noticing brightness variation, so the odd tile tends to announce itself rather than needing to be hunted.

The second trick is to break your gaze. Stare at a static image long enough and your retina adapts to it, flattening the very difference you're looking for. If five seconds pass with no luck, blink or look away and come back.

Does practice help?

Yes, but what improves is mostly strategy, not the eye. Scores tend to climb quickly over the first few sessions and then flatten near your sensory ceiling. After that, the remaining gains come from speed — handling the same difficulty faster — which is what the scoring formula rewards.

Condition matters more than people expect. Fatigue, poor sleep, and long screen sessions all show up in the numbers. One run a day at the same hour makes a surprisingly readable personal baseline.
